Hi, I'm Annie Amundsen, and Navy Midnight Press is my line of modern letterpress greeting cards and art prints, designed and printed in San Francisco, California.

I'm fascinated by the serendipitous beauty of the natural world - and the way a dash of contrasting geometry can highlight it. Navy Midnight's designs are influenced by my background in painting, printmaking and landscape architecture as well as my lifetime love of gardening. Many of the designs are based on drawings of plants in my backyard garden.

I love to make greeting cards because putting a thoughtful and beautiful card in the mail is a small moment of infinite possibility. And so is opening a lovely envelope, wondering what you'll find.

Every design starts as a hand drawing that is ultimately made into a series of printing plates and printed by hand, one color at a time, on an antique letterpress. I love the warmth and tactility of letterpress printing - it's not a fast process, but there is nothing else like the result.

We use heavyweight tree-free cotton paper, which reclaims fibers that would otherwise be discarded by the cotton cloth industry.

Where did the name Navy Midnight come from? It's from a line in a Seamus Heaney poem called 'Lupins', which are a favorite flower from my New England childhood. I grew up playing in the woods and helping take care of a huge vegetable and flower garden that had a clump of deep blue Lupins at one corner.

Thank you for stopping by Navy Midnight and for supporting independent designers! Without you, we couldn't do what we do.
